IDENTIFICATION: There are over 100 varieties of fancy goldfish, with most originating from Asia. This hardy species appears in a variety of colors including orange, black, white, blue and red. Shubunkins originated in Japan and exhibit wide varieties of caligo patterns with blue, black, orange, red and white patches with random black spots throughout.
DIET: Floating fish pellets are readily accepted. Supplementing with shelled green peas, live red-worms or freeze dried shrimp will meet their nutritional needs.
SPAWNING: Usually occurs in the spring of the year after an abrupt temperature change. Males use tubercles (a small, spur-like growth on the gill cover) to encourage females to release their eggs. Goldfish are egg-scatterers, often dispersing their eggs onto submerged aquatic vegetation.
HUSBANDRY TIPS: Goldfish thrive in ponds that have ample space, good water quality and proper nutrition. Often considered winter-hardy, goldfish prefer water depths of at least 18”.
