


MUSKELLUNGE (Esox masquinongy)
ALIAS: Muskie or musky
IDENTIFICATION: Muskellunge are a long, slender predator with a duckbill shaped mouth filled with needle shaped teeth. Adults can reach a length up to five feet and weigh over 50 lbs.
BIOLOGY: Muskie prefer lakes with much vegetation and woody structure with a preferred water temperature of 70º to 75º F. However, they can tolerate warmer water temperatures for short periods of time.
DIET: The diet of a muskie consists of crayfish, frogs, snakes, ducks and fish; essentially anything that fits in their mouth is fair game.
2-3 fish per acre in lakes over three acres stocking rate is recommended.
