IDENTIFICATION: Butterfly Koi are a beautiful, elegant fish. As with the domestic koi, these fish exhibit a wide array of color patterns and variations, ranging from white, yellow, red and black to fish with a combination of these colors. As the name suggests, butterfly koi have long, flowing fins, resembling the clean lines of butterfly wings. This species has the potential to grow to an amazing three feet long.
DIET: Butterfly koi respond well to a high-quality, commercially-prepared floating fish food. However, they will also graze on algae and plant material.
SPAWNING: By age three, butterfly koi are mature enough to begin spawning. Sensing changes in temperature and daylight length, spawning occurs in late spring. Fertilized eggs usually hatch 4-7 days after spawning.
HUSBANDRY TIPS: Butterfly koi are hardy fish, but require large volumes of water and respond better with high quality fish food.
